Stewardship in the age of Agentic AI

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit” ~Aristotle

As I reflect on a lifetime spent in the company of leaders – across boardrooms, industries, and continents, I am reminded that the essence of leadership is not static. It evolves, shaped by the tides of history, technology, and human aspiration. Today, as agentic artificial intelligence emerges on the global stage, we stand at a crossroads that will define the next era of the C-suite.

The paradigm shift to automation and the dawn of new intelligence

For many in the CXO community, the term “AI” has become almost commonplace – a backdrop to digital transformation, operational efficiency, and data-driven decision-making. Yet, agentic AI is something altogether different. It is not content to merely automate; it aspires to act, to reason, to pursue goals with a degree of autonomy that was once the sole province of human leaders.

This is something akin to science fiction. Agentic AI systems are already demonstrating the ability to negotiate, adapt, and even collaborate; qualities that resonate deeply with those who have spent decades navigating the ambiguities of leadership. The question before us is not whether agentic AI will shape the future of the C-suite, but how we, as stewards of our organizations, will shape its role.

Augmenting Leadership, Not Replacing It

The responsibilities of today’s CXOs are more complex than ever. We are called upon to balance growth with sustainability, innovation with ethics, and agility with resilience. In this context, agentic AI offers a set of capabilities that can grow our collective impact.

First, agentic AI brings a new dimension to strategic foresight. By autonomously analyzing vast, multidimensional datasets, ranging from market signals to geopolitical trends, it can surface insights that inform not just quarterly results, but long-term vision. Imagine a CFO who can scenario-plan with the support of an AI that anticipates regulatory shifts, or a CHRO who can map workforce sentiment in real time across continents.

Second, agentic AI enhances decision velocity without sacrificing depth. In moments of crisis or opportunity, the ability to synthesize information, weigh alternatives, and act decisively is paramount. Agentic AI can orchestrate these processes, freeing leaders to focus on judgment, values, and the human dimensions of choice.

Third, and perhaps most profoundly, agentic AI can help us rediscover the art of leadership itself. By handling the burdens of complexity and routine, it allows CXOs to devote more energy to what machines cannot replicate: inspiring teams, shaping culture, and stewarding purpose.

Wisdom, Judgment, and the Human Imperative

Yet, as those of us with decades of experience know, leadership is never a formula. It is a craft, honed over years of triumph and adversity. The most consequential decisions are rarely reducible to data points; they require wisdom, empathy, and the courage to act in the face of uncertainty.

Agentic AI, for all its sophistication, is a tool; one that must be guided by human judgment. The future of the C-suite will not be defined by those who abdicate responsibility to algorithms, but by those who integrate AI as a trusted advisor, amplifying their own discernment and values.

Technology, no matter how advanced, is only as valuable as the habits, virtues, and intentions of those who wield it. Agentic AI can amplify our reach, but it is our character and constancy that will define the legacy of leadership in this new era.

Ethics and Stewardship in the Age of Agency

With new power comes new responsibility. The deployment of agentic AI in leadership must be governed by principles that transcend technical excellence. Issues of bias, transparency, and accountability are not peripheral—they are central to the legitimacy of both AI and the leaders who wield it.

Boards and CXOs must cultivate not only AI literacy, but also a culture of ethical stewardship. This means interrogating the assumptions embedded in AI systems, demanding explainability, and ensuring that technology serves the broader good. In this, the wisdom of experience is our greatest asset.

As I look across the global CXO community, I see a generation uniquely positioned to shape this new era. We have witnessed the rise and fall of paradigms, the ebb and flow of markets, the enduring power of character. Agentic AI is not a threat to our legacy, but an invitation to extend it – to mentor, to guide, and to ensure that the next chapter of leadership is both innovative and human.

The future of the C-suite is agentic, yes; but above all, it remains profoundly human.
